The W124 has that to an even greater extent. For one, it's noticeably heavier which contributes to this feeling of solidity. But IMO the W201 never had quite the engines that the W124 came with. The Mercedes-Benz W124 is a range of mid-size cars made by Daimler-Benz from 1984 to 1997. The W140 leather, wood grain , sound deadening and ride quality are the best of them all. However, the W 140 has a lot more electrical systems and things that can go wrong as compared to the W124 or W202. The steering is a hybrid steering box and rack system, the transmission is a newer design and it is easier to troubleshoot than the W124.

That key is a big plus. W124 was the last generation using conventional non-electronic no chip key technology. The laser etching is hard to pick and still affordable. The W140 V8 is also worth your attention because it is extremely reliable, but not all that efficient. The V6 found in the W211 is also a fairly reliable engine and so is the 2.0d found in the W123, W124, and the W190. If you want a potent legendary diesel Mercedes engine, the 3.0d found in the W124 is the one for you.

On balance, W126 is my favourite (particularly the coupé) with one exception. Think my order of preference is: W124 500E, C126, C124, W126, W124, W140, C140. There is no easy answer to a question like this. A W126 can come with harder to maintain 5 liter V8 or the same 3 liter engine available for a W124.

I love the W124 coupes as well but I just think they're a little heavy on the tax side of things. My personal choice for a resto/mod project (124 vs 140) would be a '98 W140. To really get the car up to scratch would cost a good $30-40k (paint, interior, electronics, rims and other bits) on top of the $65k ish outlay for the car.

The W140 is like spending your day in the most comfortable chair in your living room. Driving the W126 on a 24 hour blast was hard on this old man. More the time than the car itself. The feel was solid and a little less sporty than the w124. Great for roominess in comparison to the tighter confines of the w124.

A W140 S is a few inches shorter than a W126 S (205 inches vs about 208 inches). They're about 3 inches wider, at LEAST, and are as slab-sided as a car can be. This is what makes them look so huge (and they are) compared to a W126. IMHO, the W140 is an overgrown and somewhat complex W124.
